My Nanny (Poem)

There is so little I can recall,

So much forgotten

But the lullabies

And the fond moments

Of songs and stories,

Scolding and spanking close at hand.

She had eagle’s eyes,

And like a dog never missing the scent;

She was always near

Keeping me from places I shouldn’t be,

From things I shouldn’t eat,

And friends I shouldn’t keep.

At times she was sort of an enemy

Who like a bad habit won’t let go,

With a cane on the one hand

While petting with the other;

Gestures I never understood

But I now know how special you were.

My fears were one too many,

Safe for her I will be gone another way.

Her watchful eyes will forever scold

And force me now to face my fears.

When I wouldn’t dare,

Her smile will hold and keep me going.

She was a blessing

I longed to receive again,

But her time was lived

And mine about.

Where are you?

No one now could say.

May God bless you

And keep you safe

Where the trees can sing

Your favourite lullabies

Amidst joy and everlasting bliss,

Clad in white with the heavenly hosts.
